Dublin day two – Guinness and Books

28th of may 2023

We had four objectives today, visit the Guinness Storehouse, visit the Trinity College Library for the book of Kells, visit the Lego shop and see the statue of Molly Malone. This we accomplished and more, it was to be a busy day in Dublin.

The Guinness Storehouse

As you have seen in our blog posts we have had a few Guinness during our travels in Ireland and a popular thing to do in Dublin is visit the Guinness Storehouse. This tour explains the history and process of making Guinness. The tour was busy and on many levels and took us three hours. Well worth the visit and at the end of the tour you had a pint of anything they make, or a soft drink, thats the kind of tour I like.

this was the tasting room where they gave you a sample, took you to another room where they explained how to drink Guinness properly. This was not the pint you received at the end of the tour.

Walk from the Guinness Storeroom to the University

After our  walk from the Guinness Storeroom towards the University we came across some interesting buildings and a mural of Tina Turner. We had to take the photos as she  has recently past, RIP Tina.

The Statue of Molly Malone

In Dublin’s fair city
Where the girls are so pretty
I first set my eyes on sweet Molly Malone
As she wheeled her wheelbarrow
Through streets broad and narrow
Crying, “Cockles and mussels, alive, alive, oh!”

Alive, alive, oh
Alive, alive, oh
Crying, “Cockles and mussels, alive, alive, oh”

The statue is about a fish monger who roamed the streets of Dublin.A popular song made famous by “The Dubliners”.

She sold her wares and came to a unfortunate end.

Book of Kells

A must see in any culture travelers itinerary is The Book of Kells,in Trinity college library. A medieval book a, 9th century manuscript which contains the four accounts of Jesus life that form the New Testament of the Bible. It is intricately illuminated and illustrated and is one of the most precious objects of the Western world. Although the book is only displayed open to two pages (they get changed every 6 weeks ), there is much information about it and its significance in history.

Trinity Library is another amazing building built in the 18th century with a long room that houses 200,000 of the library’s oldest books in oak bookcases. Unfortunately most of the books were being catalogued and stored away to be cleaned and preserved for future generations. The library is awe inspiring in it size and atmosphere.

After a busy and tiring day we went back by tram to our car park which had been very convenient for our Dublin visit. Our next parking overnight place would be a total contrast, next to a canal.

It was on our list of things to do but it was booked out on the days we had left. Would have liked to have visited but can’t do everything.
