24th August 2019, stayed in a carpark 5kms out of central Munich, next to a tennis centre. Free place, no services.
Ulm
Our direction was Munich and as we read about Ulm and decided it looked interesting, we were not disappointed. From our over night aire it was a short ride to the centre where locked up the bikes and went to explore on foot. It was market day and the old church was surrounded by stalls. We had a quick walk through and vowed to return for lunch. The tourist information centre gave us stacks of information (though no maps in English) and we set of to discover Ulm.
Ulm, Germany
Ulm boasts the tallest church in the world, a record that it will hold until the Sagrada Familia is completed. Unfortunately it being restored and has loads is scaffolding inside and out.
Lego build of the church. The German Legoland is about 20 kms away.
Our walk brought us to the old Rathaus, (town hall) a decorative building which also has an astrological clock. As it was coffee time the cafe next door gave us good coffee with an excellent view.
View of the old town hall from our coffee spot.
Astronomical clock on the side wall of the old town hall.
The Fishers and Tanners section of the town was the most picturesque with quaint old buildings and canals. Like many German towns a lot of it was destroyed by bombing during WW11, but this part remained intact. Another fact about Ulm is that it is the birthplace of Albert Einstein. We found the place where he was born, unfortunately building works covered the site and the memorial has been taken away until they are finished.
This is the most sloping hotel in the world. Supposed to be in the Guiness book of Records.
Someone forgot their spirit level when this place was built.
We ended up back at the market where we had a curry wurst for lunch. The stall had a constant line up as the food was excellent at a fair price. A beer at a local cafe finished off lunch nicely. A goats cheese stall took our interest and our money as we bought a small piece. Back on our bikes to the carpark. When left it was quiet and had plenty of places, now it was full with people double parked waiting for a spot. It looked like football was being played just down the road. Our place was quickly filled with an Italian motorhome as we set off to Munich. Finding an easy spot for the night in a carpark next to the bike path and a tennis centre, in the park4night app.
Curry wurst and bread. Jenny looks like she put too much curry in at once.
Finishing our day out with a beer.
25th August 2019 Stayed on a farm near the Austrian border. €10 Per night including electricity and water.
Munich
We have driven around Munich and even through Munich but have never been to see this Bavarian City. Is was on our route and we thought it time to take a look. It was a Sunday and very quiet as we road our bikes 5kms to the centre. As usual we parked our bikes and explored on foot. We had our phones and listened to and followed a walking tour by Rick Steve’s. Easy to listen to with some good information and commentary.
Munich, Germany
Our first site of the old city of Munich
By mid morning it was time to stop for a coffee and as we were in Munich some apple studel. The waitress asked if we wanted some sauce to go with it, must be how you have it so we gave it a try. The size of the serves were large and one piece between the two of us was plenty.
The town hall of Munich
Maypole in the market square, it was Sunday and closed.
Michael Jackson memorial, strange!
We ambled along some of the places were not open as it was Sunday and some of the churches were closed due to services being held. As the morning progressed so did the number of tourists. The town square very quiet when we arrived but was busy at 12.00 as that is when the clock in the town hall has chimes with figurines moving, dancing and even two knights jousting.
Some shops selling strange creatures.
We continued our tour and stopped at the famous Hoffbrauhaus. A beer hall that has been in Munich for hundreds of years. We drank beer, ate sausages with bread, listened to the ompa music and soaked in the atmosphere. The beer and food were delicious and surprisingly not expensive.
After lunch our tour of Munich continued and by mid afternoon we decided that we had seen enough and rode back to our parking spot. We are glad that we finally ventured into Munich.
If you look closely at the photo you may see a small motorhome. It has been expertly camouflaged.
26th August Stayed overnight in a carpark 2.5kms from the centre of Salzburg, €10 per night. Has a toilet and bin.
Cows
You are probably wondering why the title is called cows? After leaving Munich we stopped in a parking bay, consulted the Oracle, which in this case was our park4night app. A small farm on the border of Austria caught our attention. €10 with electricity and other services. We had done enough sight seeing and travelling so a day of rest, well almost, and some clothes washing to be done. We arrived at about 5.30 and was warmly greeted by the farmers. A cow farm where they milk the cows but have other for the meat as well as pigs. Here we stayed for the day, which was very relaxing and cows for company in the paddock. The farm also had a small shop where we purchased some wine and of course some fresh cheese.
