22nd September 2019 Stayed at Happy Camping near Prima Porte on the outskirts of Rome.
Rome Day One.
We all met at the motorhome for breakfast, the cabin that Luke and Karen along with the kids did not have a kitchen so we set up outside under the awning. The weather forecast for that day was not great, lots of rain. We armed ourselves with rain coats and umbrellas and headed for the bus stop at the campsite. Happy camping runs a shuttle bus service to the train station at Prima Porte from there it is a 20 minute train ride into Rome. A return ticket to Rome is 3 euros or $5.00 Australian.
It was still early when we reached Rome and it was relatively quiet being a Sunday. The day was spent walking to some of the usual sights in Rome. The Spanish Steps, The Trevi Fountain, The Parthanon, The Colosseum, The Wedding Cake building [not its official name] many churches and past the forum. We came across the usual scammers and had to educate the kids not to accept gifts from strangers, something given for free in Rome does not mean free. I could write a whole post on just scammers as we have seen then all in the past ten years.
We stopped in the morning for some morning tea and at midday we had lunch in a quaint family owned restaurant away from the busy tourist places. We must have walked many kilometers and the kids didn’t complain much. The only thing that put a dampener on the day was the rain that came down heavily in the afternoon. Other than that we saw plenty and by 5.00 we headed back to the train station. Our shuttle bus was due at 6.00pm and if we missed that it would be a 2 hour wait to the next one. The train was not as busy as we expected and we all managed to get a seat. A few years ago we caught the same train and we were packed in like sardines.
Back at the campsite for a bite to eat and every was very tired so again we had an early night as tomorrow we venture back for Day Two in Rome.
