Back in February we booked our trip to Sri Lanka planning to hire a Tuk Tuk and self drive, exploring the island. But alas it was not to be as 2020 delt us all a curve ball with a covid pandemic. Our flights cancelled and our money refunded we had to think of what to do for a holiday.
Option two : Tasmania looks good. A few months back the borders were all opening and it was feasible to drive from Adelaide to Melbourne and catch a ferry to Tasmania. But it was not to be as Melbourne ignited with Covid cases and again the borders were closed.
Option Three : With the borders closed we only had one option left and that was to do a trip in our own state of South Australia. We had planned to do that until another option opened up.
Option Four : New South Wales. A week before we planned to depart it was announced that the borders between South Australia and New South Wales were opening. As we have not really explored this state , why not ? let’s go there!!
Over the last couple of months we have been preparing our small campervan “Scamp” to be equipped for a longer trip. I will keep you updated on how we went. It will be very different travelling than what we are use to in the Bunyip in Europe.
Late afternoon departure. On Monday the 5th we left Adelaide at around 4:30 after Jenny finished work, the house tidied and our farewells said to the cats. Our first stop was Burra to have a meal at the pub. An “ok” meal the schnitsels weren’t the best. Then we continued on completing 257 kilometres and stopping at Terowie. Next to the now disused railway station, there is a place for caravans and motorhomes to park overnight for free, no services.
Day one. After a quiet night we drove to Broken Hill. The weather was not good with rain forecast for the next couple of days. After lunch in the park next to the tourist information office, armed with maps and information we headed off to Silverton 27 kilometres and 39 dips later.
Silverton Once a thriving mining town, now a Mecca for tourists with a pub, bakery, many art galleries and a Mad Max museum. We had a drink in the pub, visited a couple of art galleries but the bakery and Mad Max museum were closed. It was enjoyable afternoon and as we left the rain came down again. It was back through the 39 dips to Broken Hill where we spent the night at the Round Hill rest stop. The place has a long drop toilet and a table and chairs. Overnight we had plenty of company with caravans, four wheel drives, cars with tents and trucks coming and going. With the rain pelting down we cooked a curry in the pressure cooker and had an early night.
Great to hear from you both and see you back on the road. I doubt its possible to see NSW looking any better than it is now. So green, dams full and rivers running.
Safe driving Pam and I are looking forward to your thoughts.
