One village – Two Countries ??

Finally on the road.

Friday 28th of April

Today we did our final pack and a few repairs. After charging the batteries and pumping up the tyres of our bikes I went on a test ride. They both worked but when riding mine back there was a loud explosion and the rear tyre tube was no more. Another unexpected repair job, thanks to Ewoud he purchased a new tube and fitted it into the tyre. There were a few other jobs that we hadn’t counted on, the bike rack was a bit out of shape and needed some gentle persuading getting back into shape, our freezer door screw had come out of the metal bracket to hold it closed and I needed to put some more wood under the bathroom area as some wood rot had set in. So nothing too drastic.
I drove to the service station in Puttersuik and filled up the gas bottle and the diesel tank. Upon my return we tested out our gas appliances, the stove works [we can cook], the fridge works [great cold beer], the heater works [we can stay warm]. After 4 years of not being used everything is still working, we tested the hydraulic legs [all good], lights work, water pump works and even the toilet still flushes.
Packing finished and repairs done it was time to hit the road. At 3:00 in the afternoon we said our goodbyes and drove off in the direction of Hengelo to visit another cousin.
We have to thank Ewoud and Ria for all the help they have provided and also allowing us to stay in their house while we prepared for our travels. Ewoud went above and beyond by washing the camper and getting the service and road test organized.

Hengelo and visit to cousin Mike

We arrived at Mikes place at 6:00, talked for a couple of hours and went out for dinner. It was a lot of catching up and also a sad reunion as Mike mother, my auntie Jeanette had passed away two weeks ago. At 11:30 we drove to a nursery on the outskirts of Hengelo which would be our sleeping spot. We have used this placed several times in the past, very quiet.

The start of a few long days driving

29th of April 2023

We woke up early and after breakfast etc were on the road by 7:45. We have a long drive ahead as we plan to get to Waterloo in Belgium, stopping along the way at Barrle- Hertog/Barrle- Nassau [will explain the two names later].
Our route took us through Germany and we made a pitstop at a supermarket for one of our favorite liqueurs Beerenjager. You can get it in Australia for $50 a bottle but in Germany it about $20, bought one for our travels and one to bring back.

Barrle-Hertog/Barrle-Nassau

The village of Barre-Hertog and Barre-Nassau are one in the same ?? Well part of the village is Belgium as an enclave in the Netherlands. Borders go through houses, shops, business’s and halfway down streets. Border lines can be seen on some of the pavement stones. Our carpark was also divided with part of the van parked in the Netherlands and the other in Belgium. Our stop included a visit to a pancake café for poffertjes and a pancake.
We continued our drive and stopped for the night in a car park, next to a forest 10km before the town of Waterloo.
