Herculaneum and Naples part two.

Apology: our last post was sent not quite finished so not the photos had no titles and the spelling mistakes were still there. Could not edit the post due to the #*×@% WordPress app shutting down constantly. Even when the post was published the app would not let me edit it. Not happy. Lots of emails to the app people and it’s still not fixed.

Herculaneum

Our destination for today was the ancient town of Herculaneum. This place was also buried when Mt Vesuvius erupted. It was covered in deeper ash and has been harder to excavate than Pompeii but it is preserved better. Many of the artifacts from the site are in the Archeological Museum in Naples which we visited a couple of days ago.

We took a different train in to the main station and swapped trains to go to Ercolano the now modern town built over the site. There was a bit of confusion at the station but we did get on the right train and arrived at midday. It was a kilometre walk to the site but the time passed quickly as we talked to three Australian lads from Sydney, their goal was to walk up Mt Vesuvius. Arriving at the site we purchased our tickets and headed to the snack area, thinking it was a cafe that served food, but alas it was only a room with vending machines. Some machines worked and others didn’t but the outcome was a sandwich each ,a cool drink and some m&m’s.

The site was not huge but the booklet had 43 places of interest to see. The day was very warm and it took us a few hours to explore the site. The entrance fee was 13€ and it was worth it.

Old and the new. The old site in the foreground and the new town behind.

After our visit we walked up the hill to another train station that would take us back into Naples. We stopped at a cafe and after looking at the prices we decided to go a bit further. They charged 10€ for an Aperol Spritz, the normal price we have been paying is 3€. We found another bar and had 2 beers for 5€ much better. After a crowded train ride we arrived back in Naples.

Naples part two

I should have had the title “how we ate our way through Naples “. The train took us to the central station and walked across town to another station the would final bring us back. We stopped four times for food or drink.

Drinks and cake. Our first stop was a small bar where I had a beer and Jenny an iced lemon drink as we shared a small pastry.

Taralli. A cracker biscuit made with lard, black pepper and toasted almonds. They come in a round twisted knot and are more savory than sweet. We shared one as we walked.

Fish in a cone. It’s a Naples thing where you order fish of various types and they serve it to you in a paper cone. We had two different types of fish and it was delicious as we sat on the stools in the street with a beer.

Meal in a small local restaurant. Nearing the train station in one of the backstreets we came across a resturant that was filled with locals. We ventured inside and the the waiter/owner said we could look at the menu or he could recommend somethingtypical Naples. We wanted fish so I got pasta with fish and Jenny got a plate of fried fish. Just the thing to end our day in Naples. All very delicious and not expensive. Travel tip, stay away from the tourist area when you want to eat and pick a small family restaurant.

It really sounds like we were gluttons but our walk took several hours and the portions weren’t big. On the train and back to the Sosta we walked in the dark as it was nearly 9.00 when we returned.
