From East to West

11th September 2019. Stayed overnight in a carpark used for hikers. No services and free. Remote place very quiet as we were the only motorhome.

Civitella del Tronto

As has been our pattern while exploring the east side of Italy we drive some coastal roads and then up into the mountains to visit a hilltop town. Today the village of Civitella del Tronto. The road getting there had a few steep parts and was slow going but as usual the Bunyip took us to our destination.

The town provides a free carpark very close by and it was very quiet that day. The main feature of the town is the large fortress perched on top of the hill, although most of it is in ruins there is still plenty to see. After a steep walk to the entrance and handing over €6 each we spent a few hours exploring the fortress and admiring the views over the adjacent countryside. About midday we headed back to the Bunyip for some lunch where we discussed where to go next. Naples looks nice ??

Crossing Italy

We had travelled down some of the east coast of Italy and knew we had to cross over to the west at some point as our final destination was Rome. Back in 2009 we stayed close to Naples but never ventured in. As we had time up our sleeves we decided to head in that direction. We drove for the rest of the day through the winding roads until at about 4pm we stopped to decide where to spend the night. Our beloved app park4night told us of a quiet place, a carpark where people come to hike. What I didn’t explain was the very narrow road to get there. We did make it to the carpark hoping that no-one was coming in the opposite direction. Luckily we arrived and found a flat spot to park.

Our quiet overnight parking spot. Nice!

Down the road from our where we were parked was a restaurant, seemingly in the middle of nowhere, we took a punt and went down for a meal. We were met by very friendly owners and despite no english spoken we had an excellent meal. The antipasto was a meal in itself and then came the mains, gnocchi for Jenny and fettuccine for Ewout, delicious. After eating way too much It was a ten minute walk back up the hill for a quiet night.
