We had a few days free so we decided to go to Clayton Bay and stay in the caravan park. When a work college asked, what there was to do in Clayton Bay, I told them “nothing”. Apart from the caravan park there is a community hall and nothing else, no shops, no cafe’s, no service station, plenty of holiday houses but nothing to do. This is what we wanted a few days doing nothing. We have traveled in Morocco, Turkey and Sicily with friends Clyde and Anna who often told me that I have to learn how to be busy doing nothing. This is because I have itchy feet and need to be doing something.
We did take it easy but we did go for a couple of bike rides. The campsite is located on the banks of Lake Alexandrina and only an hour’s drive from our house in Adelaide. As we are self sufficient we stayed on the un-powered site at the far end of the campground, very quiet as we were the only people to use the area. The campsite had one of the best camp kitchens I have seen and we took advantage of the facilities on Saturday night to watch the football on their TV, an added bonus the Adelaide Crows won which made for a good night. Apart from the great camp kitchen the showers block was dated and the water pressure was dreadful. We paid for the serenity and it was $28 per night, not cheap but also not outrageous.
The video below is a song from Bing Crosby, Busy Doing Nothing. This is what Clyde and Anna played to us. The song has some great lyrics.
Bike Ride to Milang
On Friday after a sleep in, we decided to go for a bike ride to the nearest town Milang. It was only 12 kms away and with a tail wind it was an easy ride. Unlike Clayton Bay, Milang does have a few things to do and see. After spentding some time exploring the railway museum, it was time for lunch. For a small place it has two takeaway places but one was more appealing as it had a nice room to sit in and a view overlooking the lake. 2 hamburgers, some chips and a shared drink for $27 was a bargain, especially as the burger was very large and tasty.
Ride back to the campsite
After a pleasant few hours in Milang we headed back to our campsite. This took a bit longer as we had a headwind and a couple of steep hills. Along the way we stopped to take some photos of some black swans and pelicans on the lake.
Playing with our new toys - Drone and Dashcam
We have a new toy, a DJI Mini SE Drone. At Milang and at Clayton bay we launched it and took some footage. That is the easy part, then we have to edit the footage, put it on YouTube and then place it in our blog. Sounds easy!!! Very much a learning curve and below is our first video. We learnt from our mistakes and the footage is a bit jerky when the drone turns. We can only get better [I hope !!!].
Our next toy is a dashcam which is positioned looking out onto the road. The following video below is a combination of Jenny holding a phone and the dashcam. Again this is an experiment, and yes we should have washed the front windscreen. After each video I learn something new. Bear with me as I am just a beginner, learning to video edit is a steep learning curve.
The Drive Home - Hindmarsh Island - Goolwa -Victor Harbor
We had to exit the caravan park before 12 so we decided it was too soon to go back home and we went to explore a few places on our route home. Our first stop was Goolwa where we visited the local market and had a coffee in the main street watching the passing traffic. It seemed that a lot of people were out and about in their fancy cars going for a Sunday drive. There was plenty to see in Goolwa and we decided to come back and make a blog post entirely about Goolwa.
From Goolwa you cross a bridge over to Hindmarsh Island. Our drive took us to the Murray Mouth where in the carpark there was a Fish Cafe set up. A bit overpriced but sometimes you pay for the ambiance with your meal. Below is a short video of the Murray Mouth.
It’s a short drive to Victor Harbor where we found an easy park and strolled along the main street to the bridge that connects you to Granite Island. This bridge has recently been rebuilt as the previous on was rotting away. A horse drawn tram takes you from Victor harbor to the kiosk/restaurant at Granite Island. At $10 a trip we decided to walk ,after fish and chips for lunch I think the exercise would be good for us.
Were we succesful at “Busy Doing Nothing”???. Well after 4 days we have filled up a big Blog. So no, I think not. Well maybe another time!!!
