After 2 days preparing the Bunyip for our journey, we were ready to hit the road. Our first port of call was the Open Air Museum at Arnhem, about an hour and a half drive from s’Gravendeel. Martin came along with us bringing his car as he had to go back home. The weather the last few days has been unusually hot and the humidity has made it a little uncomfortable but we are enjoying the change from the cold of the Adelaide winter.
Open Air Museum – Arnhem
The normal entrance fee is 16€ but Ewoud had some discount dockets from Jumbo supermarket which reduced it down to 11€ [bargain]. Even at the full price the place is good value as it is a full days outing. The museum was opened in 1912 and has buildings and items from all over the Netherlands from different time periods. One of the best open air museums that we have been to and to top it off the weather was warm to hot and clear. We spent 6 hours exploring the place stopping for a beer with our lunch which we had made earlier and brought with us.
Afternoon tea was poffertijes [small Dutch pancakes covered with icing sugar and butter]. We rode on a restored tram around the grounds giving us a break from walking. A thoroughly enjoyable outing and at 5pm we said our farewells to Martin and headed off to Zutphen to a favourite aire we have stayed at several times.
The aire at Zutphen has 12 places and we were lucky to get the same place we have stayed at on previous visits, situated next to the lake with a view of the old town church. After a busy day we had a quiet evening sitting next to the lake in the shade, ate our tea and relaxed.
