Our last blog finished after our visit to the Guedelon castle in France. We are now in Morocco?..? It has been a hectic week let me fill you in on what has transpired.
Sunday 10th– The day consisted of driving with one notable landmark along the way. The Millau Viaduct which is the highest bridge in the world. Before we crossed we paid the toll of about 15 euros and stopped at the parking area to get a better view of the bridge. It is indeed spectacular and one of the reasons we took this particular route. At the end of a long day we stopped overnight at a town on the border of France and Spain, Le Perthus / el Pertus. The carpark was on the top of a hill and we has a quiet night along with several other motorhomes.
Monday 11th – We left super early and after driving until 2.30 we arrived at the Valencia camping park. This is the 4th time we have stayed there, as it is excellent value at 15 euros for the vehicle and 3 people, also has a swimming pool, the facilities are clean and it is a short walk to the metro station. After a swim to cool down we headed into Valencia for a short visit, trying the sangria and having a splendid meal.
Tuesday 12th – Another driving day. Our destination of Morocco is getting closer, its a long way and we made good time as the roads in Spain have been good. We ended our drive in a village called Riofrio, a place we found on the Park4night app. It was in the town square and we asked the man at the local bar if it was ok to spend the night there. Of course he indicated as he spoke no English. The next hour was spent drinking very nice cold beer along with a couple of platters of food. Very cheap, it really hit the spot after a full driving day. We were 200 kilometers from Algeciras where our ferry crossing to Morocco departs.
Wednesday 13th – The final stretch of our long drive. We reached Algeciras at 10.30 and headed straight to the ticket office, Voyagers Normandie, where the friendly staff sold us our tickets and gave us the paperwork fot the crossing. Our ferry was to depart at 2,30 and we did some final shopping before going to the port, where we boarded our ferry.
Finally into Morocco but not without a small hickup. We took the ferry to Ceuta which is still Spanish territory and then headed to the border of Morocco. All went smoothly although slowly until we reached the final customs point. On the front of our motorhome we have a map of Europe with the places we have traveled to. In 2011 when we last visited Morocco Jenny made a map and we stuck it where we thought it should go and to the shape of the country. The last customs guard thought that it was not accurate and took offense. He directed us to the side. To keep him happy we took off the map of Morocco and were let through. A bit pedantic but I wasn’t going to argue over such a small thing. We can always replace it. The day was getting late and we decided to go to the nearest campsite at Martil to wind down after a busy few days. Now our Moroccan adventures begin.
