Freiburg and into France

This was a building in the town square.

After driving for a few hours it was time to stop and we were close to Freiburg, so after consulting some sources we decided to stay in the aire close to the town. You can see how far ahead we plan, we have an overall direction we want to take but the fine tuning is done on the go. We were very glad that we visited as Freiburg turned out to be an interesting place and easy to get around.

When we first arrived at the aire it was raining very hard and we holed up in the “Bunyip” catching up on internet as we had paid a whole 1 euro for wifi. The place hold up to 75 motorhomes and it was about two thirds full with motorhomes coming and going constantly. It was 10 euros and the reason it was so popular was the location. Near to the tram stop and only 2 kilometres from town, it was an easy bike ride to the centre. We decided to go in in the morning hoping that the weather would be finer. In the campsite I noticed some interesting unusual motorhomes which I took photos off and have included them in our “Not your Average Motorhome Page”.

Freiburg

It did fine up in the morning and after an easy ride we were on the edge of the old town. Locking up the bikes we set off on foot to explore and taste Freiburg. We were in the black forest and it would be right not to try a piece of black forest cake while we were there and midmorning we found a quiet café overlooking a canal and shared a large piece of cake with coffee. In the centre of town surrounding the church was the market, busy with people buzzing around the various stalls.

The most popular places were the takeaway food stalls which served sausages in bread, they were cheap and as it was lunch time, and we were in Germany sausage capital of the world, it would be rude not to try their wares. We lined up the rest of the people and after purchasing our wurst stood with the rest of the people eating and trying not to get sauce and mustard on our clothes.

We had spent a few hours in the old town and thoroughly enjoyed the sights of the town. We rode back to the aire and were on the road heading to France by three o’clock.

Our last purchase in Germany

Jenny had been introduced to a liquor called Barenjager by our German friends in Oelde. Outside of Germany we have been unable to find it, as this would be our last day in Germany this trip we went to a supermarket and didn’t just buy one but two, we still have a long trip ahead of us!

We have to make it last as we wont be going back into Germany again.

Into France

The border crossing was just a sign to indicate that we were now in France and the language changed from German to French on the street signs and billboards.
We headed for the town of Selestad where we found an easy park and walked to the centre looking for the telephone shops so we could buy a Sim Card. We eventually bought a card from the SFR where the man was friendly and spoke good English. More about how the card performs later.

A few kilometres drive we found an aire next to a tennis club which allowed parking for 3 motorhomes. We were the only ones there and had a quiet night, it had been a busy day.

We stayed in Freiburg too a long time ago. It rained the day we went so much that we had to go to a hotel.
