Croatia – Bosnia [Mostar] – Croatia 7th June 2009

Monday 1st June. Raining all day Trogir to Split

Overnight the rain started to come down heavier, so we woke up to a grey sky that threatened to get worse. After packing up camp we headed to the campsite office where we could access the internet with wifi. We had a few problems with the connection to start off and after much mucking around finally established reasonable contact with our family at home. We had enough time to speak a little to them and to see the small ones faces, got smiles, waves and a couple of blow kisses so that was the best part of the day.We left the campsite and headed down the road to Trogir thinking that we could find a park and have a bit of a look with our jackets and brolly. Unfortunately parking was a bit of a problem and after a wrong turn decided it wasn’t worth the frustration and thought we would head on to Split. As we drove the rain was getting heavier and heavier and when we finally got to Split it was pouring down. We missed the turn off into the City centre and after many about turns and a complete misdirection (on my part) we finally got into the City centre (sort of). We had to find an ATM so we parked and Ewout headed off in the rain while I waited in the camper and had a much needed coffee. When he came back we finally had some lunch and had a quiet hour in the camper. We decided that we better get on the road as it was after 4 and we needed to find a camp site. We found one about 6kms down the road and there we headed to spend the night. The rain was still coming down and we had a gloomy outlook over the sea.

Tuesday 2nd June. Split

The next morning the rain had eased but it was still quite windy so we decided to head into the City to see the sights.(Old Split was originally the leisure/ retirement home of the Emperor Diocletian, who at the time was the ruler of the entire world as it was known.) We have had some good history lessons while we have been travelling and it intertwined with the modern day life is quite eye-opening.

Wednesday 3rd

Mostar then Ston

Drove to Mostar in Bosnia Herzegovina. We took the scenic route and found that it was the windiest, steep and time consuming way. Still the scenery was spectacular with steep mountains, rushing rivers and picturesque small villages. We arrived at Mostar just before lunch and parked where we could with the camper. (We had no idea where we were or where we were going) Ewout approached some official looking guys to ask if we were alright parked where we were and where the old bridge was. They turned out to be firemen and even though none of them spoke any English we established that the park was ok and where the bridge was to be found. We walked about 2km to the bridge and even though we could have found a closer park we decided that the walk would do us good. (any park with the big Marlin is a safe bet) We found the famous bridge of Mostar and it was as beautiful as expected. We had lunch overlooking the wonderful site and then wandered the old town streets. We took some terrific photos and wandered down to see the bridge from the river. When we got there we met a very nice American couple and spent some time chatting with them. As we were doing this one of the bridge divers ( jumpers) finally decided it was time to jump so we got to see him plunge into the river. I got a photo but it is hard to see much of him on it.

We left Mostar about 4.00 and had planned to find a campsite on the way back to the coast that we had been told about. But we missed it and just decided to keep going and we eventually stopped at Ston. The funny thing is that we left Bosnia Hertzogovina and then into Croatia to then enter B/H again for a short time on the coast then back into Croatia. Strange!

Thursday 4th

Ston

A quiet day in a nice camping place in a lovely bay.

Friday 5th

Drove to Orebic then Trpanj

We thought we would check out a Camping site called “Paradiso”that looked really nice, but after winding down a narrow steep road we found it was closed. Bad luck. Wound our way back along the road and decided to check out Trpanj. Good choice. Lovely bay with a small rustic campsite.

Saturday 6thTrpanj

Windy all day, though we did go for a walk into the town and had a coffee overlooking the bay.

Sunday 7th Trpanj

A little less wind, rode bikes into town and did some internet work. Spoke to Jade and then Luke on the msn. Will spend the rest of the day by the beach, swim, snorkel and read. Ahhh!
