Rome Day Two
It was decided to go into Rome a bit later this morning and we caught the shuttle bus at 11.00 and on the train again into Rome. Again the day was spent walking but visiting other sites. Luke, Karen and the kids will be spending a few days in Rome at the end of their trip and will venture into some places then, as for Jenny and myself we have been to Rome several times before and were happy just to roam the streets.
Rome, Metropolitan City of Rome, Italy
Before we knew it it was lunch time and we found a Coop supermarket where we bought some drinks and lunch, they had pizzas for 1€ each, bargain. In front of the supreme court house were plenty of park benches and we had lunch feeling very safe as in front of the court house were heavily armed soldiers.
After lunch it was a walk past the Castle St Angelo on on to the Vatican City to visit St Peters. The line was long but went fast and in no time we were through security and into the church. The place was busy as we expected but we managed to have a look around and finish our visit in the crypt to visit the previous dead Popes. The last time we were in St Peters was in May 2014 and we got to see the Pope, alas he didn’t make an appearance this time.
We left the Vatican, a new country for Riley and Alexia, and we felt the need for a drink and toilet stop. We ventured off the tourist trail and had a break from sightseeing. Beers near the tourist areas 4€, off the tourist trail they were €2.50. It was a warm day and we did have a couple, not the kids!!
Our walk continued to the Piazza Navona where there are three impressive fountains, de Moro , dei Flumi and del Nettuno. By now it was getting late and we made our way back to the train station and to Porte Primo where we had tea at the bar/cafe near the train station. We caught the shuttle bus at 8.00 and as you can imagine we were very all very tired and soon into bed, another day in Rome done.
