First Rule of Motorhoming

On our first trip in the motorhome in 2009 we stopped in Germany near Wertheim in a large camperstop  by a motorhome dealership Eurocamp. I got talking to a Dutch man who told this number one rule for motorhomes.

When reversing always have someone outside the vehicle to guide and check what is behind you.

This Dutchman learnt the hard way. He was reversing a motorhome and a branch of a tree put a hole in the back of it. The worse thing was that it was a hire motorhome and cost him dearly. We met an Australian couple also in a hire motorhome who thought that there was one tree behind him but there were two. He wrecked the bike rack mounted on the back. An expensive lesson. I read in Jason and Julie’s blog where they reversed info some steel rod that were sitcking out of  a wall at a 45degree angle resulting in a hole in the rear.http://ourtour.co.uk/home/dave-says-ouch-arrivederci-italia

We have seen plenty of dents scratches and broken lights from motorhomers who have thought that all was clear being them. Apart from all the damage the risk of running over a child ,adult or even an animal is not worth the extra minute it takes for someone to get out and take a look.

The other thing to remember is that when you are the directing always remember to look up as well as down. Motorhomes are tall and some trees and buildings aren’t.
